The Beginning…
The City Light Methodist Church began as the City Service of the Camberwell Methodist Church in 2000 as a church for students living in and around the city. We started as a Chinese service and later introduced an English service. The church had its humble beginnings as a small congregation moving with the seasons from building to building.
But with God working amongst us, we’ve come some way since then. By God’s grace, the city ministry has grown in number and in spiritual maturity over the years. In March 2007, the English and Chinese services became established as a separate church from our Camberwell counterparts and became known as the City Light Methodist Church / Mu En Tang. Our congregation is currently 120 members strong (80 from Chinese and 40 from English services) and we are based at the Mission to the Seafarers chapel on 717 Flinders St, Docklands.
The People…
The vast majority of our congregation is students and young working people. Our people hail mainly from Malaysia and Singapore with a handful of Aussies, who have disguised themselves as Chinese – don’t worry, the accents are a give-away! We hope to create a sense of belonging and community within our church.
The Programs…
Apart from our weekly Sunday services at 5 pm for both the Mandarin and English service, we have other programs during the week which anyone is most welcome to join. We run both English and Chinese small groups which meet once a week usually on a Friday or Saturday for Bible study, prayer, socialising and food. We also have a prayer meeting on Wednesday nights 7.00 pm at the church.
We hope to see you at one or all of these events.
The Big picture…
We are one of many churches under the Chinese Methodist Church of Australia (CMCA). The CMCA have churches in most Australian major cities and on neighbouring places such as Port Moresby. These churches are further divided into districts. We along with the other local churches in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania constitute the Australia South District. In Melbourne the other churches and preaching centres are in Camberwell, Clayton, Preston and Werribee.
